The largest organ of the human body needs a little loving attention to look fabulous.
Beauty was never just skin deep. Modern-day beauaty queens have also clung to this age old adage when it comes to defining beauty. Nor is beauty defined today interms of classical good looks. There are many uncrowned beauty queens the world over who have made the most of their one strong feature be it glossy hair, large eyes or a full, strong mouth. Even Cleopatra was alluring not for her features (historians have described her as snub-nosed, short and dark) but for the aura, the special appeal that she created around her entire persona.
Nothing however sets off classical or even average features, as a smooth, even-toned, youthful skin.
Start early in beauty care:
At 38, if you have the fine lines around your eyes and mouth or the skin on the neck does not seem taut, and there are fine wrinkles in your cleavage that only you know about, relax, these are all natural signs of aging.
Minimising the damage by taking beauty care seriously at an early age in your teens, perhaps is the only difference you could have made. Even if you act now, your afforts will pay and you'll love yourself by the time you are 50.
First and foremost develop a positive attitude, not a facade. Tell yourself you are beutiful and you will feel so. Be positive and curb all those silent beauty killers; Stress, strain, anger, and anxiety.
Giving in to those negative, self defeating emotions goes against the very concept of beauty of keeping the heart and mind pure and clean. Your skin acts as a mirror of your inner state of mind.
Keep away the crow's feet:
Behave in a lady like manner, the old nun at school would admonish us ever so often. Sometimes I wonder what she'd say if i told her that her tireless reminders to not sit slouched in the chair, chin in hand, frowning at a maths equation or at a firend during an argument, are firmly etched commandments in the science of beauty care!
Incidently next time you chew your food from one side, remember the muscles on the other side of your mouth do not get their exercise. Squinting in the sun and puckering up your nose when you laugh cause fine lines to appear on your nese and in the delicate skin around your eyes.
Be conscious of your smile, check in the mirror, to be sure does your skin move towards your temples when you do so? Cultivate a laugh that does not ivite those lines.
Large soft pillows may be comfortable, but after a snooze, you might have noticed lines on your face and neck that only go away after a while. Those lines could become permanent after a afew years! Counter the problem with a baby pillow or a U shaped neck pillow.

Sleep well for your skin to be well
Sleep can do wonders to the skin. A good night's sleep is very essential for a sound and healthy body and mind.
Ever heard of a good 8 - 10 hours of sleep as a skin care regimen? It not only helps in avoiding many skin problems, you will also enjoy a relaxed and radian skin. And the sweetest part of it is, it's absolutely free.
It is during your sleep that skin damage is repaired. Each day, the face is exposed to pollution, harmful cosmetics, chemicals and radiation from the sun. Apart from our internal problems, stress is a major killer. You can spend a fortune on skin creams and watch your diet, but you need your sleep for a glowing skin. Without adequate sleep you will look older and your skin will look dry and dull. No beauty cream, facials, treatments, o make up can replace or make up for what sound sleep can bring to you.
Occasionally, you can make up for lost sleep by sleeping for a longer time the next day. But if inadequate sleep is a routine you need help, that's for certain. The average need for an individual is eight hours but it can vary from person to person.
Another mantra to maximise the beneficial effects of sleep on your skin is to take a Luke warm water bath before sleeping and then use liberal amounts of moisturiser on your body and face. This will trap the moisture in the skin, as your face will be makeup free, you can use a body cream that's richer than the day cream. Wear a loose fitting nightdress. Another advantage of using skin car products prior to sleeping is that some ingredients like Vitamin C and hydroquinone which are susceptible to sunlight, are safe to use at night. When you sleep flat, the skin metabolism increases and all the night creams and antioxidants are absorbed much better.
Another benefit of sleep is that it can slow down the visible effects of the ageing process. So if you want to look beautiful and radiant, you have a clear solution right away, don't waste time.
Hit the bed right away.

Winter skin care
Winter months are hard for the skin. Temperature will not be the same outside and inside and the continual running of household heaters act as drying agents for the skin. To counter act the drying effect by heating place a bowl of water next to the radiator. You can even have indoor house plants to add humidity to the atmosphere. This will enhance the circulation of moist heat, which is more comfortable for your skin, than dry heat.
If you have oily skin, you should avoid harsh astringents and hot water, which may stimulate the sebaceous glands. Water based moisturisers should be applied only when needed.
Dry skin on the other hand, needs constant moisturising especially in cold weather.
As a general rule, the drier the atmosphere, the greasier the moisturiser should be.
Ordinary soap may further dry and irritate your skin in winter therefore, use a soap free washing cream or gel instead.
To prevent flakiness, use a soap free cleanser. For those with sensitive skin, it is better to use fewer products.
Be careful in choosing cosmetics for your make-up in winter. Use a skin freshener rather than an astringent, which can dry your skin.
Lips are adversely affected in the winter, lips chapping can be prevented by using a lip balm that contains white petroleum jelly, the petroleum jelly form a layer on the lips that prevent your lips from getting dry.
Use a hand cream to protect your hands from chapping.
Don't pay attention only to those parts of our body that are exposed, never do this mistake again, you must concentrate on protecting your entire body whether exposed or covered. Body skin become dry too, so use bath oil. While in bath smooth skin with a body scrub gently, paying special attention to the knees and elbows. After bathing or showering, moisturise skin with a rich body lotion.

How to clean your face
It's true that your face is the mirror of your health. It needs more care to take care of your face. It's time you sealed in the nourishment on your best beauty asset. Do you know that Dryness robs you of beautiful skin.
1. In skin care the first point is Clean right first, and then take care:
There must be many women like yourselves who believe that washing with any regular soap is sufficient cleaning for your face. It's not just cleaning but how you clean that really matters, and that is cleaning with care. Our skin needs to maintain a delicate balance of moisture levels and that is only achieved with the correct method.
2. The correct method of cleaning your skin:
And that's saying Good Bye to Soap! Soaps are alkaline in nature. They harm skin with the residue they leave behind and roughen skin texture as well. Using ordinary soap on your face strips your skin of the lipids that preserve natural moisture, thus harming and drying it up. Thousands of women who use soap regularly claim that something as basic as yawning or biting into an apple gave them an uncomfortable pull on their face. That is a sign of dry skin.
3. What you should do?
First start using a 100 % soap free creamy face wash which deep cleans without drying, leaving your face looking and feeling soft, silky and clean. This helps restore your skin's lost moisture which is essential to keep it looking youthful and radiantly clean.
Clean your face like the above method twice day morning and night.
Do not rub and scrub your skin roughly. Be always gentle as you massage it in a circular motion. After washing splash your face with plenty of cool water and pat dry.
Remember to choose a face wash gentle enough to be used whenever you require it throughout the day too.
If you feel that you have some skin allergic problems and any other skin problems consult your doctor.
II. Skin care right way:
Dryness kills 10,000 of your skin cells every single day. Our environment constantly robs our skin of its essential moisture, subjecting it to rigorous wear and tear. It loses its softness and suppleness long before its time, rendering it dry, patchy and dull.
Cleaning and caring go hand in hand:
Where the correct cleaning method is of utmost importance, the care of one's skin extends to the use of a good moisturiser, that nourishes and protects it. Cleaning and caring go hand in hand , one is really quite ineffective without the other. A good moisturiser penetrates deep into the skin's layers to replenish moisture, leaving it noticeably softer almost immediately. Always use your deep moisture cold cream first thing in the morning and last thing at night. Do this regularly. Sit back and watch your skin acquire a soft youthful glow that you will appreciate forever.
It is true that most of your body is almost always protected by clothing, but that does not mean that your skin is free from the same symptoms of dryness that affect your face. Don't neglect your body because that too needs to feel cared for, since use a moisturising body lotion with vitamin E and delicate floral extract. This will help your skin with a soft and fragrant freshness. With the use of this everyday soon you will find your skin feeling smoother than ever before and glowing.

Skin care - complexion a complete guide
The skin is a tissue covering the whole body, the largest organ of the human body, one and half sq mt's in area approximately. It consists of 3 layers: the epidermis, the dermis and the sub-dermis.
The epidermis is a visible surface layer with no blood vessels. It is, in fact, made up of dead but important cells. This layer heals without a trace.
The second layer, the dermis is full of collagen fibres, cells that store and release vital moisture. This layer has sebaceous glands which secrete oil and sweat glands which regulate body temperature.
This layer acts as a cushion between the surface skin and muscle below. It is this layer which has blood vessels and is responsible for blushing and other changes in the colour of the skin. Some people turn red with anger or white from panic.
These glands function through which are the exit , visible to the eye and which if the skin is not cleaned properly, become clogged and form whiteheads or blackheads. It is the sebaceous glands which cause oily, dry or normal skin. These glands are present on the scalp also and decide the type of your hair oily, dry or normal.
The sub-dermis is the bottom most layer of the skin, it has fat cells which are thicker in women. This is what gives them their rounded appearance.
Types of skin
1. Oily skin:
Oily skin comes from the over-activity of the sebaceous glands, oily skin is shiny, thick and has enlarged pores. It is likely to get blackheads and whiteheads. Oily skin makes up for these horrors by aging slowly. Since it has so much moisture of its own, it tends to get wrinkles late in life.
2. Dry Skin:
Dry skin is thin and fine pored. It blotches easily and feels tight. It occurs because of inactivity of the sebaceous glands. Less oil is secreted and this makes the skin look dehydrated. Dry skin tends to wrinkle early in life.
3. Normal skin:
This is the most desirable and also the rarest type of skin. Here the sebaceous glands function properly and the skin is smooth and flexible and the pores are just fine.
4. Combination skin:
This is the most common type of skin. It usually has a T-shaped panel of oiliness down the centre forehead, nose, mouth and chin whereas the cheeks and other portions are dry.
5. Sensitive skin:
Both oily and dry skin can be sensitive. This type of skin is sensitive to certain foods, alcoholic drinks, emotional problems or application of new cosmetics.
Recognition of skin type
Different types of skin need different types of treatment. Combination skin will need 2 types of treatment for the oily and dry areas.
But most people do not know which type of skin they possess. So it is important to know how to recognise a skin type because wrong recognition may lead to wrong treatment of skin. Given below is the way to recognise your skin type.
Clean your skin with a good cleanser at night. Do not apply any night cream on your face. When you get up in the morning, before washing your face, place a tissue paper on your face and press lightly.
If the tissue paper becomes oily, your skin is oily. If the tissue paper remains dry, then the skin is a dry one and if it is has oiliness on the T zone and the remaining areas are dry, your skin belongs to the combination category.
Skin Problems.
Acne:
Acne occurs due to over activity of the sebaceous glands. If acne is scratched, it leaves permanent scars on the skin. In fact, acne is hardly a problem. If the pimples are only a few in number and grow now and then, in that case it is best to leave them to disappear on their own. But if it is a persistent problem, then it should be dealt with.
There are many homemade remedies which will not only free you of acne but will also make your skin clear. Take fresh neem leaves, dry them for 3days and make a powder of them by either rubbing with your palms or grinding in a mixer. Preserve this powder in an air-tight container.
Apply this paste on your face; apply extra neem powder on the pimples. when it is absolutely dry, rub your face very lightly with upward movements, and wash off.
Neem is a very effective herb for pimples. Apply this pack thrice a week and after 4 weeks, you will not see a single pimple on your face.
This treatment makes the face look dehydrated because the aim of this treatment is to absorb the extra oil from the skin. To get rid of this dryness, drink plenty of water and apply oil-free moisturiser on your face during the day.
Circles under eyes:
Dark circles under the eyes appear due to various reasons such as eye strain, faulty reading habits, and reading in inadequate light, lack of sleep etc. It can be easily treated if the cause of the problem is discovered.
Keep chilled cucumber slices on your eyes for 10 minutes daily. Cucumber gives great relief to tired eyes. Placing used tea bags on the eyes also serves the same purpose. This is a very effective way of treating dark circles under the eyes but it helps only if the treatment is done every day.
A good healthy diet and adequate sleep also help in mitigating the circles under the eyes.
Blackheads:
Blackheads are nothing but clogged pores. They appear on oily skin. On combination skin, they appear on the nose. Unclean skin invites blackheads.
Regular deep pore cleaning helps in getting rid of blackheads. Adding a pinch of turmeric in any face pack you use goes a long way in avoiding blackheads.
Pigmentation:
It is discolouring of the skin due to amount of melanin deposits in the skin. It occurs due to reaction to some cosmetics, medicines, hormonal changes or during pregnancy. Rubbing with the peel of boiled potato helps in lightening pigmented spots.
Freckles:
They are pigmented spots which appear on the surface of the skin. On exposure to the sun, they increase in number.
Prevention is better than cure. Use a good sun block before going out in the sun. Lime juice helps in gradually lightening freckles.
Skin care:
All types of skin can look good if a regular skin care routine is followed. Today, so much of research has been done on skin and beauty care that no skin problem is insurmountable. Even the onset of wrinkles can be easily delayed if one follows an appropriate skin care routine.
Even if you have a flawless complexion, you still need to follow a regular skin care routine because maintaining a healthy skin is more important than acquiring a healthy skin. Pollution and a life full of tension make skin care more important today than it was some 20 years back. I can't recall my grandmother using any moisturiser, toner or night cream and she still had skin which would qualify for a neighbour's envy.
After recognizing your skin type, choose beauty products accordingly and follow a strict skin care routine if you want to have a flawless and youthful skin.
Steps In Skin Care:
Cleaning:
Whatever the type of skin, cleaning of the skin plays an important role in skin care. A good cleanser should be used to remove the city's grime and the day's make up and to loosen clogged pores.
An oily skin requires more cleaning than dry skin because of open pores which become clogged with dirt and oil.
These days the market is flooded with skin care products. One can choose any face cleanser made from natural products. Every night before retiring to bed clean your face thoroughly.
If you have nothing else, for cleansing take 2 tsp cold milk. Apply on your face with cotton and clean your face, for oily skin, add a little water in the milk. This cleanser is not only economical but it is also always available in every household. Oily skin should be cleansed twice a day.
Toning:
All skins need a freshener or a toner. Toners come in both alcoholic and non-alcoholic forms. Alcoholic toners are meant for oily skin, whereas non-alcoholic toners are for dry skin.
Toners are required to clean the remains of the cleanser and to tone up the muscles. It aims at stimulating blood circulation and restoring the pH balance which may have become unbalanced during the cleaning process. The best way to tone up the skin is to splash lots of clod water on the face. Every time you clean your face, wash your face with tap water and then splash lots of clod water on your face. This practice will close the pores which had opened while the skin was being cleaned. You can use any ready made toners also.
Moisturising:
Moisturiser forms a film over the skin's surface, holding in the natural moisture and providing a base for make up. Make up stays on for a longer time if a good moisturiser is applied first. It is a misconception that a moisturiser is required only for dry skin, it is a must for all skin types. Moisturiser forms a barrier between the skin and the environment. An oil free or light weight moisturiser will do for oily skin but for dry skin, a rich moisturiser is to be used. If needed, use it more than once a day. But at night it must be removed.
Night Cream:
Ideally skin should be left bare to breath at night. But for dry or mature skin, after cleaning and toning your skin, apply a little night cream in dots. Let it be there for about half an hour. Then wipe it off lightly with a tissue paper because whatever good night cream has to do, it will do in the first 30 minutes. After that it is not required.
Face pack:
Face or mask can cleanse, revitalize, stimulate and exfoliate. It does deep pore cleaning. A good mask helps to free clogged pores, loosen blackheads, remove dirt etc. A good mask meant for your skin type should be used twice a week. Even though you have so much of good face packs in the market, there is nothing like a homemade pack.
You can use gram flour, rice powder, cucumber juice, milk, cream etc, depending on the type of skin you have.
Scrubber:
A scrubber or exfoliating mask is designed to remove dead cells from the surface of the skin and to encourage the growth of new cells. It helps in increasing blood circulation and brings a nice glow to the skin. It is to be used once in a week. You must apply a very thin film of moisturiser before using a scrubber.
A very good homemade scrubber is a mixture of choder, rava and rosewater in equal proportions. Apply it on the face. When semi dry, scrub your face with moist hands. Scrub a little hard on the sides of the nose and where you have blackheads. Without scrubbing, this pack is not very effective, that is the reason for the name 'scrubber'. Later wash it clean.
Sunblock:
Use a good sunblock while going out in the sun. Without a sun-screen, your skin is exposed to ultraviolet rays and pollution and is more inclined to have freckles and blemishes. This exposure can even lead to skin cancer.
Facial:
Besides routine and regular skin care, a monthly facial is a must. This facial can be easily done at home. Take any good cold cream for the massage. If your skin is very dry, you can even use milk cream.
Massage your face by making circular movements with your fingertips and palms. The movements should be very gentle and in the upward direction only. Do the massage for around 15-20 minutes. After the massage, give light steam to your face for 2 minutes.
Then apply a scrubber on your face. Scrubbing will help in removing blackheads, the last step in the facial is pack application. Let the pack dry fully and then wash off with cold water. As the pack dries, the pores which got opened while massaging and steaming will close.
In the end, splash lots of cold water on your face, splashing of cold water will help in closing all the pores fully and effectively.
Diet:
A good diet which includes fresh fruit and green vegetables is as essential as the facial for a flawless complexion. Drink plenty of water at least 10 to 12 glasses a day- which helps in cleaning the system. You will benefit even more from a glass of warm water with 1 tsp of honey as the first thing in the morning. It dilates the blood vessels and blood flows more easily and quickly around the body, hence bringing a natural glow to the skin.
Last but not the least, is practising the art of staying happy. If your mind is happy and tension free, it will show on your face. No regular skin care routine and facial can do anything, if one is always brooding or worrying. So be happy.
If you follow a regular skin care routine, you will soon have the beautiful skin which you are longing to have.

Skin Care in Winter
The winter nip is in the air. The onset of winter is certainly a time to care for your skin. The season is responsible for a host of skin problems. Your skin starts to peel, chap, crack, flake and itch. Keep it moist and supple to keep it beautiful.
Dead skin cells:
Natural skin care products and some reminders:
- If you have a dry skin, then hot showers and that lovely soak you've promised yourself in the bath tub, is best avoided. Hot water strips the skin's natural oils, making it drier. Keep showers and baths brief. Sponging the body clean or skipping the daily bath can check the dryness.
- Always moisturise your body after a bath. When blow drying hair, aim the hot air away from the face as this again has a drying effect.
- This winter, indulge in some expensive creams or lotions. However, until you go out and purchase some, us the oil on your kitchen shelf, (most best you can deeply rely with is coconut oil) sounds frightful? Add a few drops of rose water to it and presto, you have a fragrant moisturiser!
- Immediately after a bath, smoothen some oil or lotion on the damp body as this is when the skin absorbs the moisturiser the best. Don't rub too vigorously with the towel. Simply, pat dry.
- Use soaps that have a high glycerin content or soaps with fatty substances as these will help keep the skin from drying out. Soap with a lot of fat content can become soggy fast, while those with glycerin do not really work up a lather.
- Avoid medicated soaps, as they contain drying elements that are harsh on the skin.
- Do you have those ugly cracks on the heels? If you do, it's time to take extra care of your feet. We don't usually forget to put cream or moisturiser on the other parts of our body during winter, but when it comes to the feet, we tend to skip them altogether. We neglect them, so, soak the feet once a week in warm water for 15 minutes with a capful of shampoo stirred in.
- The soapy suds will soften the dead skin cells. Brush and scrape clean. Pat dry and rub some petroleum jelly on them. Before snuggling in bed every night, don't forget to massage some cream on them. If you follow this regimen daily, your feet will stay soft and tender.
Dead skin cells:
- All of us exfoliate, as the experts say. Dry and dead skin cells on the top layer peel off, making way for the new moist cells underneath, removing roughness and softening surface lines. Once clogged pores are scourged, the skin can breathe better. The dead skin cells on the kneecaps, elbows and heels will benefit from natural, skin softeners like oatmeal and almond meal scrubs.
- Almond meal nourishes the skin and contains vitamin A which keeps it soft. Its granular texture easily removes dead skin cells, rub gently in a circular fashion wherever needed, even on the face.
- We may think that the winter sun is milder, but it still can be damaging to the skin. During this time, we tend to soak up as much sunshine as possible. Ultraviolet rays penetrate deep into the skin and ruin its elasticity, causing it to sag.
- If you have to be outdoors, keep in mind the time you spend both in the sun and wind. If you move about in the sun, you will only absorb 1/3 the amount as compared to if you are prone and simply sunning yourself.
- Too much sun makes the skin dry and saggy. Wearing sun glasses will prevent you from squinting. The skin around the eyes are thinner and hence must be treated with special care.
- If you are glowing, that probably is because you are eating well, exercising and staying stress-free. A nourishing and well balanced diet full of proteins, minerals, vitamins, fruits, vegetables and natural foods, will make your skin healthy too. It will be less likely to peel, crack or dry out.
- Remember, too much of anything in any form is not good. Rather, an excessive amount of anything only harms the body. Moderate eating, sleeping, exercising and working, take the middle path in life.
- With the advancing times, stress has become part and parcel of our lives. Meditate once in a while or even regularly, if you have to close the mind to stressful thoughts and let it free. Soon you will feel calm and tranquil. The good news is that, if you exercise in the winter, you will probably burn up more fat than in the summer. Whether you exercise indoors or go to the gym for a vigorous workout, it does not matter. The key to soft, beautiful skin is exercise. Exercise improves the blood circulation and does great things to you. Your glowing face, skin and body tells it all!
Natural skin care products and some reminders:
- It takes the skin about 20 minutes to absorb all that it can from the skin care product that you use on your face. Avoid the use of products with chemical substances, as these may irritate the skin since it penetrates the inner layer of the skin. Fruit pulps, vegetable juices, herbs and other natural products, when applied to the skin, make it glow.
- Before you apply anything on your face, always clean the skin thoroughly as this will help the beneficial properties of the pack, tonic or face mask to penetrate better into the skin.
- Natural products like sandalwood, gram flour, lime, turmeric, rose water, egg whites and curds contain certain properties that are extremely beneficial to the skin, as they nourish, cleanse and soften it. They also eliminate harmful effects of exposure to pollution.
- Honey which softens the skin, opens clogged pores and acts as a powerful moisturiser, can be mixed with other natural products and applied to the face, as a mask.
- Rose water, lemon juice and glycerin make a wonderful skin softener, which works like magic on dried and cracked lips, rough heels and hand and generally on the whole body.
